Hadith 1499

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Madinah, the people were waiting for him. When he arrived, the people said: The Messenger of Allah has come, the Messenger of Allah has come. Hearing this, I also came out with the other people, and when I saw the blessed face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I became certain that his face was not the face of a liar (i.e., he could not be a liar). The very first thing I heard from him at that time was: "O people! Spread the greeting of peace, feed others, maintain ties of kinship, and pray at night when people are asleep; you will enter Paradise in peace."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1498)

The meaning of this hadith is that greeting with peace (salam), hospitality to guests, maintaining ties of kinship (silat ar-rahm), and regular observance of the night prayer (tahajjud) are such righteous deeds that will lead a person to Paradise with safety. Therefore, from this hadith, along with other good deeds, the virtue of the night prayer (tahajjud) is established. The narrator of the hadith, Abdullah bin Salam, was an Israelite and a scholar. He knew of the glad tidings, birth, and signs of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) from the revealed scriptures. That is why he said that this face cannot be the face of a liar or a fabricator, and he acknowledged that the prophethood and the call of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) are true.
