Hadith 1493

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: My close friend (Muhammad, peace be upon him) advised me regarding three things which I will not leave until death: to perform Witr before sleeping, to fast three days in every month, and to perform two rak‘ahs of Duha prayer.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1492)

There is a difference of opinion among the early and later scholars (salaf and khalaf) regarding Ishraq and Duha (Chasht) prayers: are they the same or are they two separate prayers? In light of these narrations, it becomes clear that they are two distinct prayers. Ishraq is performed after the sun has risen, and Duha is performed when the sun has ascended higher, up until before its zenith. In the aforementioned hadith, it was the counsel of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) to Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) that he should never abandon it. As for the statement of Abdur Rahman bin Abi Ya’la that no one except Umm Hani (radi Allahu anha) has mentioned the Duha prayer, the narration and testimony of a single narrator is sufficient for establishing proof. And as for what is narrated from Aisha (radi Allahu anha) that she never saw the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) performing the supererogatory (nafl) prayers of Duha, the scholars have interpreted this as being due to her lack of knowledge (of the matter). Furthermore, the Ishraq prayer consists of two or four rak‘ahs, and the Duha prayer is from two rak‘ahs up to eight rak‘ahs.

And Allah knows best.
