Hadith 1471

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that some beloved persons narrated a hadith to me, among whom was Sayyiduna Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), and Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) is the most beloved to me. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no prayer after the Fajr prayer until the sun rises, and there is no prayer after the Asr prayer until the sun sets."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Ahadith 1469 to 1471)

There are certain times during the day and night in which performing prayer (salah) is disliked (makruh): at the time of sunrise, exactly at midday, after the ‘Asr prayer until sunset, and after the Fajr prayer until the sun rises.

However, if an obligatory (fard) prayer has been missed (qada), then it is permissible to perform it at these times. Likewise, if the Sunnah prayers of Fajr could not be performed before the Fajr prayer, then they may also be performed after the congregational Fajr prayer. Those people who continue to perform the Sunnah of Fajr while the congregation is standing are acting contrary to the hadith, because the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: «إِذَا أُقِيْمَتِ الصَّلَاةَ فَلَا صَلَاةَ إِلَّا الْمَكْتُوْبَةِ meaning, “When the congregation is established, there is no prayer except the obligatory one.”

(This hadith is coming ahead at number 1488.) Furthermore, if someone enters the mosque during the prohibited times, he should still perform the greeting of the mosque (tahiyyat al-masjid).

The words of the hadith are: «إِذَا دَخَلَ أَحَدُكُمُ الْمَسْجِدَ فَلْيَرْكَعْ رَكْعَتَيْنِ The details have already passed in hadith number (1431). Therefore, some situations are excepted from the prohibition mentioned in the above hadith.
