Hadith 1441

It is narrated from Lady Aisha and Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them, both said: When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, became ill (i.e., in his final illness), he would cover his blessed face with a sheet, and when he felt short of breath, he would uncover his mouth and in that state would say: "May Allah's curse be upon the Jews and Christians; they took the graves of their prophets as places of worship." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was warning against doing as they did.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1440)

That is, they began to worship there just as they worship in mosques, or they performed prostration (sajdah) in that manner, and they illuminated and adorned it as they do with mosques.
(‘Allamah Waheeduz-Zaman rahimahullah).

In the explanation of this hadith, Mawlana Muhammad Dawood Raaz sahib rahimahullah has quoted very beneficial discourse, which is mentioned here for the sake of benefit.

The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam warned the Ummah so that they would not turn his grave into a mosque. In one hadith, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Do not make my grave a place of festivity.”
On another occasion, he said: “O Allah! Do not make my grave an idol that people worship.”
Among both the Jews and the Christians, grave-worship was common, and it remains so even today.

Hafiz Ibn al-Qayyim «إغاثة اللهفان» states that if someone compares the present-day common Muslims with the hadith of the Prophet and the reports of the Companions and Followers (Sahabah and Tabi‘in), he will see that today a large multitude of Muslims have resolved to oppose the hadith of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.

For example:
(1) The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam forbade praying even at the graves of the Prophets, yet Muslims enthusiastically perform prayers at many graves.
(2) The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam strictly prohibited the construction of buildings over graves, yet today large structures are built over them and named khanqah, mazar sharif, and dargah, etc.
(3) The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam forbade lighting lamps at graves, yet grave-worshipping Muslims lavishly illuminate graves and dedicate many properties for this purpose.
(4) The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam forbade adding extra soil to graves, yet these people, instead of soil, reinforce them with lime and bricks.
(5) The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam forbade writing inscriptions on graves, yet these people build grand structures and inscribe Qur’anic verses (along with names) on the graves, as if they have become opponents of every command of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and rebels against the guidance of the religion.

The author of Majalis al-Abrar writes that this misguided sect has gone to such extremes in exaggeration (ghuluww) that they have established etiquettes, pillars, and rituals for graves just like the Sacred House of Allah (Baytullah), which is open idolatry in place of Islam. Then, it is astonishing that such people call themselves Hanafi Sunni, whereas Imam Abu Hanifah rahimahullah never, ever permitted such practices.

May Allah Ta‘ala grant such Muslims sound understanding.
Ameen.
