Hadith 1431

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah al-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When any one of you enters the mosque, he should perform two rak‘ahs (of Tahiyyat al-Masjid) before sitting down."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1430)

The ruling of the aforementioned hadith is general, meaning that whoever enters the mosque at any time—whether it is the time of sunrise, sunset, or zenith—the command is that he should not sit in the mosque without first performing two units (rak‘ah) of prayer. Even if the imam is delivering the sermon (khutbah), one should still perform two light units before sitting, as is explicitly mentioned in Hadith number (1590).

In the present era, some people, upon entering the mosque, first sit down and then stand up to pray, whereas this is in clear opposition to the narration of Muslim: «فَلَا يَجْلِسْ حَتَّىٰ يَرْكَعَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَّجْلِسَ». And the divine command is: «﴿فَلْيَحْذَرِ الَّذِينَ يُخَالِفُونَ عَنْ أَمْرِهِ أَنْ تُصِيبَهُمْ فِتْنَةٌ أَوْ يُصِيبَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ﴾ [النور : 63]»—those who oppose the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) should beware lest a severe calamity befall them or a painful punishment overtake them.

May Allah grant everyone the ability to follow the Sunnah.

Ameen.
