Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Ahadith 1422 to 1424)

The fact that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam performed voluntary (nafl) prayers sitting in the last part of his life was due to weakness, and this was a particular characteristic of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, as has been mentioned in the previous chapter. Furthermore, this is a practical action (fi‘l), whereas in the previous chapter a verbal hadith (qawli) has been mentioned, and according to the principles of hadith, a verbal statement (qawl) takes precedence over an action (fi‘l). In light of all these evidences, performing voluntary prayers sitting cannot in any way be considered a Sunnah, and it is superior to perform the prayer standing.

And Allah knows best.
