Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I was informed that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said that the prayer of a person who prays sitting is half the prayer. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I went to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (and saw) that he was praying while sitting. I said: O Messenger of Allah! I have been informed that you said: The prayer of a person who prays sitting is half the prayer, and you yourself are praying sitting? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes (I said so), but I am not like any one of you" (that is, my case is different from yours).

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1421)
From this hadith, it is understood that performing prayer while sitting without a valid Shar‘i excuse yields half the reward.
In the Indian subcontinent, people have made it a practice to perform voluntary (nafl) prayers while sitting, even though this hadith clearly states: "You are not like me; if you perform prayer while sitting, you will receive only half the reward of the prayer."
There are also several other narrations in Abu Dawud regarding this matter, from which it is evident that performing prayer while standing is superior.
It is regrettable that people abandon what is superior and give preference to what is less virtuous.
