Hadith 1407

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, that a man entered the mosque after the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, had already led the congregation in prayer. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Is there no one who will give him charity by praying with him?" Imam Darimi, may Allah have mercy on him, said: He may perform the 'Asr prayer, but if he repeats the Maghrib prayer, he should pray four rak'ahs.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 1405 to 1407)

Two points are established from these hadiths.

Firstly, it is permissible to perform the same prayer in congregation in the same mosque where the congregation has already taken place. If it were not permissible, then why would the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) say, “Is there anyone who will give charity to this man, or trade with him, and pray with him so that he may also attain the reward of congregation?”

It is mentioned in Bayhaqi that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) stood up and prayed with him. The second issue established from this hadith is that even if one has already performed the prayer with congregation, it is still permissible to form another congregation for the prayer, and the person who has already prayed with congregation may pray again.

Those who deny the permissibility of a second congregation after one congregation has already taken place should reflect upon this hadith.

Guide us to the truth and grant us the ability to follow it, and grant us the ability to recognize falsehood and to avoid it.”

Ameen.
