Hadith 1400

Narrated by Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the mosque of Banu Awf bin Amr (which is in Quba), and he began to pray, and the people filled the mosque. They would greet him with salam, and Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I asked (Sayyiduna) Suhaib (may Allah be pleased with him): How did the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reply to salam (while in prayer)? He indicated with his hand: He would reply in this manner.

Brief Explanation
(Explanation of Ahadith 1398 to 1400)
From these authentic ahadith, it is established that if someone greets (says salam) during the prayer, one may respond with a gesture, because both giving salam and replying to it are, in the light of the Qur’an and Hadith, among the religious obligations. Some people do not reply to salam while eating, nor do they like to give salam at that time. Is eating a better act than performing prayer? This should be pondered.
