Brief Explanation
(Explanation of Hadiths 1380 to 1382)
After the tashahhud, it is permitted by the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam to supplicate (make du'a) after reciting at-tahiyyat and sending blessings and salutations (salat and salam), as has already been mentioned.
In the aforementioned narration, there is a command to seek refuge from four things; therefore, some scholars have declared it obligatory to recite this supplication, i.e. «اَللّٰهُمَّأَعُوْبِكَ», in the tashahhud.
Similarly, saying «اَللّٰهُمَّإِنِّيْظَلَمْتُنَفْسِيْظُلْمًاكَثِيْرًاوَلَايَغْفِرُالذُّنُوْبَإِلَّاأَنْتَفَاغْفِرْلِيْمَغْفِرَةًمِنْعِنْدِكَوَارْحَمْنِيْإِنَّكَأَنْتَالْغَفُوْرُالرَّحِيْمْ.» is also established and correct, and saying «رَبَّنَاآتِنَافِيالدُّنْيَاحَسَنَةًوَّفِيْالْآخِرَةِحَسَنَةًوَّقِنَاعَذَابَالنَّارِ.» is also Sunnah. In addition to these, there are several other supplications whose recitation in the tashahhud is Sunnah.
Imam Ibn Taymiyyah rahimahullah has given preference to reciting only those supplications in the tashahhud which are authentically established from the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
