Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have been forbidden from reciting (Qur'an) while in the state of bowing and prostration, so in bowing, glorify your Lord, and in prostration, make supplication with full devotion, for it is possible that (the supplication) will be accepted."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 1361 to 1363)
The details regarding saying «سُبْحَانَرَبِّيَالْعَظِيْم» and «سُبْحَانَرَبِّيَالْأَعْلَيٰ» in bowing (ruku) and prostration (sujud) have already been discussed.
From these hadiths, it is established that supplication (dua) should also be made in prostration, because there is a possibility of supplications being accepted in prostration. Therefore, any supplication, whether transmitted (ma’thur) or non-transmitted (ghayr ma’thur), can be made, whether the prostration is in an obligatory (fard) prayer or a voluntary (nafl) prayer. Imam Ibn Taymiyyah rahimahullah has preferred reciting only transmitted (ma’thur) supplications in prostration.
