Hadith 1328

Abdullah bin Abu Qatadah narrated that his father (Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah, may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to him that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite Surah Al-Fatihah and two other surahs in the first two rak'ahs of Zuhr prayer, and in the last two rak'ahs he would recite only Surah Al-Fatihah. Sometimes he would let us hear a verse, and he would make the first rak'ah longer and the second rak'ah not as long. Similarly, in the 'Asr prayer, and likewise in the Fajr prayer, he would recite at length.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Ahadith 1325 to 1328)
From these narrations, it is established that recitation (qira’ah) should be lengthened in the prayers of Fajr, Dhuhr, and ‘Asr. Also, in the first rak‘ah of Dhuhr, the recitation should be longer, and in the second rak‘ah, it should be shorter than the first; in the third and fourth rak‘ahs, only Surah al-Fatihah should be recited. Occasionally, in a silent (sirri) prayer, uttering a phrase or verse aloud is also permissible. Furthermore, it is the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) to perform the prayer and recitation in an organized manner.
