Hadith 1322

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that his grandmother, Malikah, prepared food and invited the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to eat. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ate the food and then said: "Come, let me lead you in prayer." Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I took up a mat of mine which had become black due to frequent use, I sprinkled water on it, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood on that mat (for prayer). I and an orphan boy (Dhamirah) formed a row behind him, and my grandmother stood behind us. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in two rak‘ahs of prayer, and then departed.

Brief Explanation
(Explanation of Hadiths 1319 to 1322)

The two hadiths above indicate that the prayer of a person who prays alone behind the row is not valid, and he will have to repeat the prayer. The third hadith is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas radi Allahu anhu that his grandmother prayed alone behind the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, as if there is no harm in it. In view of these hadiths, some of the esteemed Imams have said that praying alone behind the row is not correct and the prayer must be repeated. Some Imams have said that praying alone behind the row is disliked (makruh), but the prayer will still be valid.

Also, from this hadith, there is evidence for performing voluntary (nafl) prayers in congregation during the day, and the noble character of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is evident in that when an elderly woman invites him, he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam accepts the invitation without hesitation, and then, for the sake of blessing or teaching, leads her in prayer, «صلى اللّٰه على نبي الرحمة والإنسانية و على آله و صحبه و سلم تسليما كثيرا».
