Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I had intended to order my young men to collect firewood, then order someone to lead the prayer, then I would go to those people who stay behind from this prayer (do not attend), and burn them and their houses together. If they knew that they would find a good piece of meat or two with little meat on the ribs, they would surely attend the mosque, and if they knew the reward and virtue of these prayers, they would come crawling (on their knees)."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1307)
In view of this hadith, some scholars have declared congregational prayer (salat al-jama‘ah) to be obligatory (wajib), because if it were merely a Sunnah, then the one who abandons the congregation would not have been threatened with being burned alive in the fire. Some scholars have said that this warning was for the hypocrites (munafiqun), therefore it is not obligatory; performing prayer in congregation is Sunnah. In any case, it is not possible to deny the virtue of congregation.
Samahat al-Shaykh Ibn Baz rahimahullah considered performing the obligatory prayer in congregation to be obligatory, and his fatwa is that if a person, while having the ability, does not perform the obligatory prayer in congregation, then his prayer at home will not be valid.
