Hadith 1296

Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the Iqamah is pronounced, do not stand up until you see me."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 1294 to 1296)

If the imam is not present in the mosque, then people should not stand for prayer until they see him coming.

This was from the mercy and compassion of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, lest there be a delay in his coming out and people become tired while standing.

There are several opinions of the scholars in this regard; the correct view is that if the imam is present in the mosque, then as soon as the iqamah begins, people should stand up and not wait for "Hayya 'ala as-salah" or "Qad qamatis salah." Some people, even if they are standing, sit down as soon as the iqamah begins, and when the mu'adhdhin says "Qad qamatis salah," then everyone stands up. This is not correct because there is no mention of this in the ahadith.

And Allah knows best.
