Hadith 1294

Sayyiduna Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) say: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to lead the prayer in a manner that was very light, gentle, and complete.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Ahadith 1292 to 1294)

Both of these are verbal ahadith, from which it is understood that the imam should not make the prayer and recitation so lengthy that it becomes difficult for the worshippers. When this person did so, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam expressed extremely severe anger towards him. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam himself would also lead the prayer in a light (not lengthy) manner so that no weak, feeble, or person with a need would find the prayer burdensome. However, when the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam prayed alone, his prayer would be very lengthy. The purpose of a light prayer is not that it should be performed hastily, without proper composure in the postures and without tranquility in bowing (ruku) and prostration (sujud). The prayer should be light, but with calmness, tranquility, and proper fulfillment of the postures (tadil al-arkan), otherwise the prayer will not be valid, as is established from the hadith of the one who prayed badly (hadith al-musi’ salatihi), which is coming ahead.
