Brief Explanation
(Explanation of Hadiths 1250 to 1253)

«أَسْفِرُوْا» or «نَوِّرُوْا» both have the same meaning; it means that the Fajr prayer should be performed when the morning becomes clear. However, it does not mean that the Fajr prayer should be delayed so much that the sun is about to rise.

In an authentic narration, it is mentioned that «غلس»—that is, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would perform the Fajr prayer in darkness, and when the women would return to their homes, they would not be recognized due to the darkness, even though the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would recite between sixty to one hundred verses in the prayer. As has been mentioned in Hadith number (1250).

Some individuals mention with great emphasis the action of the Companion of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (radi Allahu anhu), of not raising the hands (raf‘ al-yadayn), and they set aside many of his other hadiths.

In [بخاري شريف 527] and in this book’s Hadith number (1259), it is stated that the most beloved deed is to perform the prayer at its earliest time. However, these brothers, in opposition to the hadith of Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (radi Allahu anhu), perform the Fajr prayer at a time when only a few minutes remain before sunrise.

Similarly, they perform the ‘Asr prayer when very little time remains before sunset.
