Hadith 1242

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would perform the ‘Asr prayer, the one who would go towards the upper area of Madinah, even after reaching there, the sun would still be high.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1241)

‘Awali refers to those villages which were situated around Madinah, and were located at a distance of four, five, or eight miles. The meaning is that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would perform the ‘Asr prayer while the intensity of the sun remained. Therefore, performing the ‘Asr prayer shortly before sunset is against the Sunnah. Similarly, performing the Fajr prayer only a little before sunrise is also against the Sunnah. And for those who delay the prayer or perform the obligatory prayer outside its prescribed time, there is a severe warning.
