باب كَرَاهِيَةِ الْفُتْيَا:Chapter: Dislike of Giving Religious Verdicts
Hadith 124
أَخْبَرَنَا أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَكَمُ بْنُ نَافِعٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا شُعَيْبٌ، عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ، قَالَ: بَلَغَنَا أَنَّ زَيْدَ بْنَ ثَابِتٍ الْأَنْصَارِيَّ رِضْوَانُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ كَانَ يَقُولُ إِذَا سُئِلَ عَنْ الْأَمْرِ: "أَكَانَ هَذَا ؟ فَإِنْ قَالُوا: نَعَمْ، قَدْ كَانَ، حَدَّثَ فِيهِ بِالَّذِي يَعْلَمُ وَالَّذِي يَرَى، وَإِنْ قَالُوا: لَمْ يَكُنْ، قَالَ: فَذَرُوهُ حَتَّى يَكُونَ".
Imam Zuhri said that it has reached us that when Sayyiduna Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about something, he would ask: "Has this incident occurred?" If the answer was yes, he would narrate a hadith or express his opinion, and if the people's answer was "no," he would say, "Let it be, ask when it occurs."
