It is narrated from Abdul Aziz bin Rafi that someone asked Ata (may Allah have mercy on him) about something, so he replied «لا أدري» "I do not know." He was asked, "Will you not say anything even from your own opinion?" He said: "I feel shy before Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, that my statement should be followed on the face of the earth."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Ahadith 102 to 108) All these narrations are from the pious predecessors (salaf saliheen) and the eminent scholars. Muhammad ibn Sirin, Ibrahim al-Nakha’i, Qatadah ibn Di’amah, and ‘Ata’ and others are counted among the great jurists (fuqaha) and hadith scholars (muhaddithin). Yet observe their humility and caution: despite being oceans of knowledge, they would only say what was transmitted from the Book and the Sunnah and from the Companions (sahabah) and Followers (tabi‘in); otherwise, they would openly declare their lack of knowledge.
