Hadith 3980
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us and in his hand were two books. He (peace be upon him) said: "Do you know what these books are?" We said: "No, O Messenger of Allah! Unless you inform us..." He (peace be upon him) said about the book held in his right hand: "This is a book from the Lord of the worlds. In it are the names of the people of Paradise, the names of their fathers, and the names of their tribes, and then their mention is summarized till the end. Now, nothing can be added to it nor subtracted from it." Then, regarding the book held in his left hand, he (peace be upon him) said: "This book is also from the Lord of the worlds. In it are the names of the people of Hell, the names of their fathers, and the names of their tribes, and then their mention is summarized till the end. Now, nothing can be increased or decreased in it." The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) said: "O Messenger of Allah! If the matter has already been decided, then what is the purpose of action?" He (peace be upon him) said: "Keep following the right path and remain moderate. Surely, the end of a person of Paradise will be upon the deeds of the people of Paradise, whatever he may have done before, and the end of a person of Hell will be upon the deeds of the people of Hell, whatever he may have done before." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) threw down those two books and said: "Your Lord has finished with His servants—a group will go to Paradise and a group to Hell."
