Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Sahihah

Tawoos says that Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: ‘Isa (peace be upon him) learned his argument (from Allah Almighty), and Allah Almighty taught him, which is mentioned in this verse: «وَإِذْ قَالَ اللَّـهُ يَا عِيسَى ابْنَ مَرْيَمَ أَأَنْتَ قُلْتَ لِلنَّاسِ اتَّخِذُونِي وَأُمِّيَ إِلَـهَيْنِ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّـهِ» “And [beware the Day] when Allah will say, ‘O Jesus, Son of Mary, did you say to the people, ‘Take me and my mother as deities besides Allah?’” (5: Al-Ma’idah: 116) Then he stopped at the rest of the verse. Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Allah Almighty taught (‘Isa, peace be upon him) this answer: «سُبْحَانَكَ مَا يَكُونُ لِي أَنْ أَقُولَ مَا لَيْسَ لِي بِحَقٍّ» ‘Glory be to You! It was not for me to say that to which I have no right.’” (5: Al-Ma’idah: 116)
