Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Sahihah

Someone asked Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him): Abu al-Abbas! Can a murderer repent? Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) was astonished and asked: What are you saying? He repeated his question. Ibn Abbas again asked: What are you saying? This happened two or three times. Then Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: How can his repentance be accepted? I heard your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "(On the Day of Resurrection) the murdered person will come, holding his head with one hand and grabbing the collar of the murderer with the other hand. Blood will be gushing from the veins of the murdered person. He will bring the murderer to the Throne and say to the Lord of the worlds: He killed me. Allah Almighty will say to the murderer: You are ruined, and then he will be sent to Hell."

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty has refused to accept the repentance of the killer of a believer."

Sayyiduna Zaid bin Thabit says: When this verse was revealed: "Those who do not call upon any other god along with Allah, nor do they kill a soul which Allah has forbidden, except by right." (__QUR_N__ Surah Al-Furqan: 68), we were greatly surprised at the leniency and flexibility given in this verse. Six months passed, then this verse was revealed: "Whoever kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell, to abide therein forever, and Allah is angry with him and has cursed him... till the end." (__QUR_N__ Surah An-Nisa: 93)
