Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Sahihah

Sayyiduna Amr bin Abasah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Who has obeyed you in this matter of religion? He (peace be upon him) said: “A free man and a slave.” I said: What is Islam? He (peace be upon him) said: “Pure speech and feeding the people (is Islam).” I said: What is faith? He (peace be upon him) said: “Patience and gentleness (is faith).” I said: Which Islam is best? He (peace be upon him) said: “(The best Muslim is) the one from whose tongue and hand other Muslims are safe.” I said: Which faith is best? He (peace be upon him) said: “Good character.” I said: Which prayer is best? He (peace be upon him) said: “The one with long standing.” I said: Which migration is best? He (peace be upon him) said: “To leave what your Lord dislikes.” I said: Which jihad is best? He (peace be upon him) said: “(The best fighter is) the one whose horse’s legs are cut and his blood is shed.” I said: Which time is best? He (peace be upon him) said: “The last part of the night (or the middle of the last part of the night).”
