Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Sahihah

Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the companions of the Prophet said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! The wealthy have taken all the reward, (because) they pray as we pray and fast as we fast, but they give charity from their extra wealth. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Has Allah not given you means by which you can give charity? (Indeed, He has, and their details are as follows:) Saying «سبحان اللہ» is charity, saying «الحمد للہ» is charity, saying «الله اکبر» is charity, saying «لا اله الا الله» is charity, enjoining good is charity, forbidding evil is charity, and having relations with your wife is charity.” They asked: If one of us fulfills his desire, is there reward for him in that? (How is that?) The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Tell me, if he were to use his private part in something unlawful (adultery), would he not bear a sin? (Certainly he would.) In the same way, if he uses it in something lawful, he will have a reward.”
