Hadith 2977
It is narrated from Abu Tayyaah: A man asked Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Hanbash (may Allah be pleased with him): When the devils came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), what did he do? He said: The devils descended from the mountains and came down into the valleys to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Among them was a devil who had a flame of fire in his hand; he wanted to harm the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with it. But he became overawed and began to retreat (on his own). Jibreel (peace be upon him) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Muhammad! Say. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: What should I say? He said: Say: "I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah (in which there is no deficiency and) which neither the righteous nor the wicked can surpass, from the evil of everything He has created, and from the evil of that which descends from the sky, and from the evil of that which ascends into it, and from the evil of that which He has created in the earth, and from the evil of that which comes out of it, and from the evil of the trials of night and day, and from the evil of every visitor of the night except one who comes with good, O Most Merciful!" (By reciting this supplication) the fire of the devils was extinguished and Allah Almighty defeated them.
