Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Sahihah

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: "Whom do you count as martyrs?" They said: The one who fights in the way of Allah and is killed. (He is a martyr.) The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Then the martyrs in my Ummah will be few. (The reality is that) the one who is killed in the way of Allah is a martyr, the one who dies by a spear in the way of Allah is a martyr, the one who drowns is a martyr, the one who falls from his mount in the way of Allah is a martyr, and the one who dies of pneumonia in the way of Allah is a martyr." Muhammad bin Ishaq said: «مَجْنُوْب» refers to «صَاحِب الْجَنْب».

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him), the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Whoever falls from his mount and dies in the way of Allah, he will be a martyr."
