Hadith 1511
- (كذلك سَوْقُكَ بالقوارير، يعني النساء. قاله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - في حجة الوداع) .
It is narrated from Sayyidah Safiyyah bint Huyayy (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed Hajj with his wives. While you (peace be upon him) were on the way, a man dismounted and began to drive the women’s mounts quickly. The Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Is this how you drive the glass vessels (i.e., women)?” So they continued on, and then the camel of Sayyidah Safiyyah bint Huyayy (may Allah be pleased with her) sat down, even though her mount was the best among them, and she began to weep. When the Prophet (peace be upon him) found out, he came and began to wipe her tears with his hand, but she wept even more, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) kept telling her not to. When she wept excessively, the Prophet (peace be upon him) scolded her and ordered the people to dismount, so they dismounted, even though the Prophet (peace be upon him) had not intended to dismount. She says: The noble Companions dismounted, and it was my turn that day. When the Companions dismounted, the tent of the Prophet (peace be upon him) was set up, and he entered it. She says: I could not understand how I could go to the Prophet (peace be upon him), and I was also afraid that perhaps there was some displeasure in your heart regarding me. She says: I went to Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) and said to her: You know that I would not trade my day for anything, but I give you my turn on the condition that you reconcile the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) to me. She said: Alright. Now she says: Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) took a cloak dyed with saffron and sprinkled water on it so that its fragrance would be fresh, then she dressed herself and went to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and (upon arrival) lifted a corner of the tent. The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked: “O Aisha! What is the matter with you? This is not your day.” She said: This is the bounty of Allah; He gives it to whom He wills. You stayed with your wife. When evening came, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said to Sayyidah Zainab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her): “O Zainab! Lend your sister Safiyyah a camel.” Because she had more mounts. Zainab said: Should I lend your Jewess? Upon hearing this, the Prophet (peace be upon him) became angry with her and stopped speaking to her and did not speak to her until he reached Mecca, then spent the days of Mina, until the Prophet (peace be upon him) returned to Madinah, and the months of Muharram and Safar also passed, but the Prophet (peace be upon him) neither went to Zainab nor assigned her any turn. She too lost hope in you. When the month of Rabi’ al-Awwal came, the Prophet (peace be upon him) went to her. Zainab saw your shadow and said: This is the shadow of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and you do not come to me, so who could this (shadow) be? The Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) entered upon her. When Zainab saw you, she said: O Messenger of Allah! (I am so happy at your coming) that I do not know what to do. She says: She had a slave girl whom she used to keep hidden from the Noble Prophet (peace be upon him). Then she said: Such-and-such slave girl is for you. Then the Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) went to Sayyidah Zainab’s bed, it had been removed, so he spread it with his own hand, then had relations with his wife and was pleased with her.
