Hadith 986
- " إنه ليغضب علي أن لا أجد ما أعطيه، من سأل منكم وله أوقية أو عدلها فقد سأل إلحافا ".
A man from the tribe of Banu Asad says: I camped with my family in Baqi‘ al-Gharqad. My family said to me: Go to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and ask him for something to eat. Then they became busy mentioning their needs. I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and I saw that a man was sitting with him, asking him, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was saying: "I have nothing to give you." That man left angrily, saying: By my life! You give to whomever you wish. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "He is angry with me because I have nothing to give him, even though any one of you who asks while he has an uqiyyah (forty dirhams) or something equivalent to it, then he has asked out of stubbornness and insistence." (When this) Asadi (heard this) he said: Our she-camel is better than an uqiyyah. So I returned and did not ask the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Later, barley and dried dates were brought to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and he gave to us as well, until Allah made us self-sufficient. Malik says that an uqiyyah is forty dirhams.
