Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Sahihah

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went to a young man who was in the throes of death. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "What do you think (about your reward and punishment in the Hereafter)?" He replied: O Messenger of Allah! I have hope in Allah, but I also fear for my sins. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whenever these two things (i.e., fear and hope) are combined in the heart of a person at such a time (i.e., at the time of death), Allah grants him what he hopes for, and grants him safety from what he fears."
