It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you were to realize the vastness of Allah Almighty's mercy, you would rely (on it and sit back and) not perform any deeds; and if you were to realize the extent of His wrath, (you would think that) no deed would benefit you."
Hadith Takhrij«
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Mahfooz Ahmad
Benefits:
Just as a believer should have hope in the mercy of Allah Ta'ala, he should also fear the wrath of Allah Ta'ala. Allah Ta'ala has clarified this subject, saying:
That is: "Their sides forsake their beds (i.e., they are diligent in performing voluntary prayers at night), and they call upon their Lord in fear and hope, and they spend out of what We have provided them."
Meaning, the believers both hope for the mercy and grace of Allah and also fear His anger, punishment, and retribution. It is not merely hope to the extent that they become heedless of actions, as is the attitude of those who are negligent or act wrongly, nor do they become so overwhelmed by fear of punishment that they despair of His mercy. In this blessed hadith, there is a refutation of those who, relying on the vastness of Allah Ta'ala's mercy, continue to decrease in their graph of righteous deeds.
