It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The prayer in congregation is twenty-five times superior to the prayer of a person performed alone. ➊ Congregational prayer enlivens the soul; under the pretext of congregation, the worshipper spends more time in the remembrance of Allah, and to be heedless of the congregation when performing prayer is the height of negligence, laziness, and indolence. In fact, it should be said that such a person is in the clutches of Shaytan; it is possible that he may soon succeed in harming him, and what greater harm can there be than being deprived of many blessings? Sayyiduna Abu Darda radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: «ما من ثلاثة فى قرية ولا بدو لا تقام فيهم الصلاة إلا قد استحوذ عليهم الشيطان فعليك بالجماعة فإنما ياكل الذئب القاصية»[ابوداؤد، نسائي] “In any village or settlement where there are three people and congregational prayer is not established, it means that Shaytan has gained dominance over them. Adhere to the congregation, (otherwise bear in mind that) the wolf eats the sheep that strays far from the flock.”
Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: «صلاة الجماعة تفضل صلاة الفذ بسبع وعشرين درجة»[بخاري و مسلم] “Congregational prayer is twenty-seven times superior to the prayer of a person who prays alone.”
Congregational prayer is the greatest means of expressing humility and submissiveness before Allah, as Sayyiduna Uqbah ibn Amir radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: «يعجب ربك من راعي غنم فى راس شظية الجبل يؤذن بالصلاة ويصلي فيقول الله عز وجل : انظروا إلى عبدي هذا يؤذن ويقيم الصلاة يخاف مني قد غفرت لعبدي وادخلته الجنة»[ابوداؤد، نسائي] “Your Lord is amazed at the shepherd of goats who, while on the peak of a mountain (grazing his goats, when the time for prayer comes), gives the adhan and performs the prayer. Allah (upon witnessing this act) says: ‘Look at My servant; he gives the adhan and calls the iqamah for prayer (then performs the prayer). He fears Me. I have forgiven My servant and admitted him to Paradise.’”
The two angels who record a person’s good and bad deeds alternate their shifts at the times of Fajr and Asr prayers; that is, the angels assigned for the day arrive before the performance of Fajr prayer and depart after Asr prayer, and those assigned for the night arrive before Asr prayer and depart after Fajr prayer. Regarding those who perform prayer in congregation, when Allah asks about them, the angels reply: “When we departed, Your servants were praying, and when we arrived, Your servants were praying.”
