Hadith 51

- " من أسلم من أهل الكتاب فله أجره مرتين وله مثل الذي لنا وعليه مثل الذي علينا ومن أسلم من المشركين فله أجره وله مثل الذي لنا وعليه مثل الذي علينا ".
Sayyiduna Abu Umamah Bahili (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I was standing beneath the mount of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the occasion of the Farewell Pilgrimage. The Prophet said many excellent things, among which was this: "Whoever among the People of the Book (a Jew or a Christian) becomes a Muslim will receive a double reward, and he will be given the same rights as we have, and the same responsibilities will be imposed upon him as are upon us. And whoever among the polytheists becomes a Muslim will receive a single reward, and he too will have the same rights as we have, and he will have to fulfill the same responsibilities as we fulfill."

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:

«ثَلَاثَةٌ يَوْتُوْنَ أَجْرَهُمْ مَرَّتَيْنِ ..... وَمُؤْمِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ الَّذِي كَانَ مُؤْمِنًا، ثُمَّ آمَنَ بِالنَّبِي فَله أجران» [بخاري، مسلم]

“Three types of people will receive a double reward: The person from the People of the Book who was a believer (according to his own law), then believed in Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam—such a person will receive a double reward.”

Those among the People of the Book who, before the advent of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, were upon truth and faith, and after his proclamation of prophethood did not persist in stubbornness and hostility, but instead, considering the laws of ‘Isa alayhis salam and Musa alayhis salam to be abrogated, accepted the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam as the Messenger of Allah—such individuals strove greatly against their own souls and supported the truth, whether with ‘Isa alayhis salam or with Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. Therefore, they were granted a double reward.

In contrast, those who, before the advent of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, were devoid of monotheism and were polytheists, not adhering to any particular heavenly religion, but upon the proclamation of his prophethood, believed in him—such people will receive a single reward, because

They traversed one stage in attaining the truth, whereas the righteous among the People of the Book traversed two stages.
