Hadith 39

Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) says: One night I went out and saw that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was walking alone, and there was no man with him. I thought perhaps the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) disliked that anyone should walk with him. So I began to walk in the shadow of the moon. He turned towards me, saw me, and asked: “Who is this?” I said: “It is Abu Dharr, may Allah make me a sacrifice for you.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Abu Dharr! Come here.” I went to him and walked with him for a while. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to me: “On the Day of Resurrection, those with much wealth will be the least in reward, except for the one whom Allah gives wealth and he scatters it to his right, left, front, and back (in charity), and does good deeds with it.” Then I continued to walk with him until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Sit here.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) made me sit on a flat piece of land, around which there were stones. Then he said: “Remain seated here until I return.” Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went towards the Harrah (the land of black stones) and disappeared from sight. He stayed there for quite a while. Then I heard him coming, saying: “Even if he steals and even if he commits adultery.” When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) reached me, I could not restrain myself and said: “O Messenger of Allah! May Allah make me a sacrifice for you! Who were you speaking to near the land of Harrah? No one was replying to you.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “That was Jibreel. He met me near the Harrah and said: (O Muhammad!) Give glad tidings to your Ummah that whoever dies without associating anything with Allah will enter Paradise.” I said: “Jibreel! Even if he has stolen and even if he has committed adultery?” He said: “Yes.” I said: “Even if he has stolen and even if he has committed adultery?” He said: “Yes.” I said: “Even if he has stolen and even if he has committed adultery?” He said: “Yes, and even if he has drunk alcohol.”

Angel Jibril (alayhis salam) said: Even if he has committed theft and adultery. This statement from the blessed hadith is extremely worthy of reflection, because ordinary people may take encouragement to commit sins from this sentence. The reality of the matter is that this sentence is a refutation of misguided sects such as the Khawarij and the Mu'tazilah, who believe that those who commit major sins (kabirah) will remain in Hell forever.

The meaning of this sentence is that if Allah, exalted is He, forgives the crimes such as adultery (zina) and theft of those who do not commit shirk, then they will enter Paradise directly; and if He does not forgive, then they will temporarily remain in Hell to receive punishment for those sins, and after that, they will reach Paradise. This meaning is established by many other ahadith as well. Furthermore, this hadith shows that major sins do not negate faith (iman), nor do they nullify good deeds because of them.
