Hadith 3808

Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Musa (peace be upon him) said: O my Lord! Show me Adam (peace be upon him) who removed us and himself from Paradise. Allah Almighty showed him Adam. (For ease, the translation is presented in the form of a dialogue.)

Musa (peace be upon him): Are you our father Adam?
Adam (peace be upon him): Yes.
Musa (peace be upon him): Are you the one into whom Allah Almighty breathed His spirit, taught all the names, and commanded the angels to prostrate to you?
Adam (peace be upon him): Yes.
Musa (peace be upon him): So what made you do that which caused you and us to be expelled from Paradise?
Adam (peace be upon him): Who are you?
Musa (peace be upon him): I am Musa.
Adam (peace be upon him): Are you the same Messenger of the Children of Israel to whom Allah Almighty spoke directly, without any intermediary, from behind a veil?
Musa (peace be upon him): Yes.
Adam (peace be upon him): Did you find (in the Torah) that before my creation, it was already written in Allah Almighty's Book (that I would be expelled from Paradise)?
Musa (peace be upon him): Yes.
Adam (peace be upon him): Do you blame me for a decision of Allah Almighty that had already preceded concerning me before I was created?"

After narrating this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Adam (peace be upon him) prevailed over Musa (peace be upon him), Adam (peace be upon him) prevailed over Musa (peace be upon him)."
