Hadith 313

Sayyiduna Miqdam bin Ma’dikarib al-Kindi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “I have been given a (divine) Book and another thing equal to it, that is, something like it (in addition). Soon, a satiated man reclining on his couch may say: ‘This (divine) Book is sufficient between us and you. Whatever is declared lawful in it, we will consider lawful, and whatever is declared unlawful in it, we will consider unlawful.’ Beware! The matter is not like that. Listen! The carnivorous beast with fangs is not lawful, nor is the domestic donkey, nor is the lost property of a dhimmi (non-Muslim under Muslim protection), unless its owner has given up hope of it. And whoever becomes a guest of a people, and they do not host him, then it is permissible for him to take from them the amount of hospitality due to him.”
