Hadith 30

- أبشروا وبشروا من وراءكم أنه من شهد أن لا إله إلا الله صادقا دخل الجنة ".
Abu Bakr bin Abu Musa narrates from his father, who says: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with some members of my tribe. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rejoice and give glad tidings to those who come after you that whoever bears witness with a sincere heart that Allah alone is the true deity, he will enter Paradise." We left the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to give people the glad tidings, and we met Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). (When he learned of the situation,) he sent us back to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who sent you back?" We said: Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Umar! Why did you send them back?" Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: (If people are given such glad tidings, they will rely on it and abandon further deeds.) The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent upon hearing this.

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits:

This great hadith indicates that the glad tidings given regarding being free from shirk (polytheism), being saved from Hellfire, and becoming deserving of Paradise due to the kalimah of tawhid (word of monotheism) do not mean that a person should abandon righteous deeds in light of these glad tidings. If a person, after uttering this kalimah, does not become steadfast in performing prayer (salah), fasting (sawm), almsgiving (zakat), pilgrimage (hajj), etc., it would mean that he did not utter this kalimah with true sincerity and certainty of heart.

Regarding those verses and hadiths in which deeds with immense reward and merit are mentioned, we should consider them a blessing and act upon them abundantly. This is the real objective of the Shariah: by mentioning reward and merit, to encourage people to act.

For preachers and sermon-givers, a great principle has been stated in this hadith: they should deliver sermons while keeping in view the conditions and temperaments of the people, and should temporarily refrain from mentioning such verses and hadiths which, if misunderstood, may lead people to draw incorrect conclusions. However, after proper training, every hadith can be mentioned and its purpose and objective explained.
