Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Sahihah

‘Amir bin Wathilah reports that Nafi‘ bin ‘Abd al-Harith met Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) at the place of ‘Usfan. He had appointed him as the governor over Makkah. He asked: “Have you appointed anyone as governor over the people of the valley?” He replied: “Ibn Abza.” He asked: “Who is Ibn Abza?” He replied: “He is one of our freed slaves.” He said: “You have made a freed slave their leader?” He replied: “He is a reciter of the Qur’an and knowledgeable about the laws of inheritance.” Be aware! Your Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Allah elevates some people by means of this Book and lowers others by it.”
