Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Sahihah

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash‘ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “It is obligatory for every Muslim to give charity.” Someone asked: If he has nothing to give in charity? He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “He should work with his hands (i.e., labor, toil), benefit himself (by earning a wage), and also give charity.” Then it was asked: If he is not able to do that? He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “He should help someone in distress and need.” Then it was asked: If he is not able to do that? He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “He should enjoin good or righteousness.” It was asked: If he cannot do even that? He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “He should refrain from harming others; indeed, that too is charity.”
