Hadith 2515

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Musa (peace be upon him) asked his Lord about six things, and he thought that these were specific to him, and he disliked the seventh thing.

(1) Musa (peace be upon him) said: O my Lord! Which of Your servants is the most pious? Allah Almighty said: “The one who remembers Me and does not forget Me.”

(2) Musa (peace be upon him) said: Which of Your servants is the most guided? Allah Almighty said: “The one who follows My guidance.”

(3) Musa (peace be upon him) said: Which of Your servants is the most just? Allah Almighty said: “The one who judges for people as he judges for himself.”

(4) Musa (peace be upon him) said: Which of Your servants is the most knowledgeable? Allah Almighty said: “The one who is not satiated with knowledge and gathers the knowledge of people to his own knowledge.”

(5) Musa (peace be upon him) said: Which of Your servants is the most honorable? Allah Almighty said: “The one who forgives after having power (over his opponent).”

(6) Musa (peace be upon him) said: Which of Your servants is the wealthiest? Allah Almighty said: “The one who is content with whatever (Allah Almighty) gives him.”

(7) Musa (peace be upon him) said: Which of Your servants is the poorest? Allah Almighty said: “The one who considers what he has (i.e., the wealthy person) as little and desires more.”

Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Wealth (and independence) is not called richness; true richness is the richness of the heart. When Allah Almighty intends good for a servant, He places richness in his soul and piety in his heart. And when Allah Almighty intends evil for a servant, He places his poverty before his eyes.”
