Hadith 2499

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Indeed, Musa (peace be upon him) was a very modest and body-covering person. Because of his modesty, no part of his body could be seen. The people of Banu Isra'il who caused him harm said: This man covers himself so much because of some bodily defect; either he has leprosy, or his testicles are swollen, or there is some other affliction. Allah Almighty intended to clear Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) of the accusation they had made against him. One day, Musa (peace be upon him) went into seclusion and took off his clothes, placing them on a stone, and then bathed. When he finished and went to take his clothes, (what happened was that) the stone ran away with his clothes. Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) picked up his staff and ran after the stone, saying: O stone! Give me my clothes! O stone! Give me my clothes! (Running and running) he reached a group of Banu Isra'il. They saw him in a naked state and found him to be the most handsome among Allah's creation and completely free from the defect they had accused him of. They themselves said: By Allah! There is no defect in Musa (peace be upon him). There the stone stopped, he took his clothes and wore them, and began to strike the stone with his staff. By Allah! Because of Musa (peace be upon him) striking it, there were three or four or five marks on that stone. And this incident is the manifestation of Allah Almighty's statement: «يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَكُونُوا كَالَّذِينَ آذَوْا مُوسَى فَبَرَّأَهُ اللَّـهُ مِمَّا قَالُوا وَكَانَ عِنْدَ اللَّـهِ وَجِيهًا» (33:69 Al-Ahzab) 'O you who believe! Do not be like those who harmed Musa, but Allah cleared him of what they said, and he was honorable in the sight of Allah.'"
