Hadith 20

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There was a man among those before you who had not done any good deed except for Tawheed (belief in the Oneness of Allah). When his time of death approached, he said to his family: Listen carefully: If I die, burn me and make me into coal, then crush me and scatter half of me in the air on land and half in the sea. If Allah the Exalted is able to get hold of me, He will punish me with a torment that He has not inflicted on anyone in the worlds. When he died, they did as he had instructed. Meanwhile, Allah the Exalted commanded the land, and it gathered his particles, and He commanded the sea, and it gathered his parts as well. Suddenly (he was given existence and) he was seen standing in the grasp of Allah the Exalted. Allah the Exalted asked: O son of Adam! What made you do what you did? He said: O my Lord! (I did all this) out of fear of You, and You know best. Allah the Exalted forgave him because of his fear, even though he had no good deed except for Tawheed."

These are the blessings of tawhid (monotheism); may Allah grant us the ability to become true monotheists.

Dear readers! It is a matter worthy of reflection that on one hand, Allah Almighty forgave the killer of a hundred people and the person who, out of compassion for a thirsty dog, gave it water to drink. But on the other hand, He made the woman who tied up a cat and caused its death deserving of Hell, and even a noble Companion like Sayyiduna Sa’d ibn Mu’adh radi Allahu anhu was squeezed by the grave.

From such rare examples, we learn that good deeds have their own blessings and evil deeds have their own misfortunes. We do not know which law Allah Almighty will apply to us: whether He will hold us accountable for our sins, as He did with the woman who killed the cat, or whether He will forgive our slips, as He did with the killer of a hundred people. We cannot make any decision with certainty; however, we will certainly maintain good expectations of Allah Almighty that He will deal with us mercifully.

In summary, the biographies of the first listeners of these hadiths, the noble Companions, are before us. They would rejoice because of their good deeds, but would become worried due to their human slips, and would conclude that, according to one’s ability, as much provision for the Hereafter should be gathered as possible.
