Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Messenger of Allah said: "The Angel of Death used to come to people and they would see him. He came to Musa (peace be upon him) and said: Accept the command of your Lord (and allow your soul to be taken). Musa (peace be upon him) struck him and gouged out his eye. The angel returned to Allah Almighty and said: O my Lord! You have sent me to a servant who does not want to die; he has gouged out my eye (by slapping me). If You had not honored him, I would have dealt harshly with him. Allah Almighty restored his eye and said: Go back to My servant and ask him: Do you wish to live? If you desire, then place your hand on the back of an ox; for every hair that comes under your hand, you will live one year. Musa (peace be upon him), upon hearing this from the angel, said: O my Lord! Then what will happen? The reply came: Then you will die. He said: O my Lord! Give me death now, in such a state that I am at a stone's throw from the holy land. Then he was made to smell a fragrance and his soul was taken. After that, the angel began to come to people in a hidden manner." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah! If I were there, I would show you his grave by the red sand hill."
