Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Sahihah

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: At the place of Harrah, a man had a she-camel. He gave it to another man, and now it had become sick. When it was about to die, his wife said to him: (It is better that) you slaughter it so that all of us (can at least) eat its meat. But he refused to do so (and the she-camel died). He went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and mentioned the whole matter. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked him: “Do you have anything that suffices you?” He said: No. So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Then eat from it (the dead she-camel).” At that time, the she-camel had died. He said: So we ate its fat and meat for twenty days. Then we met its first owner and he asked: Why did you not slaughter it? I said: I was just shy of you.
