Abu Ash’ath San’ani says: I went towards the mosque of Damascus and I went early. I met Shaddad bin Aws (may Allah be pleased with him), and with him was Sanabahi. I asked them: May Allah have mercy on you, where are you intending to go? They said: We are going to visit a sick brother of ours. (Hearing this) I also went along with them. We reached the patient. Both of them asked him: How are you? He replied: By the grace and kindness of Allah. Sayyiduna Shaddad (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Allah the Exalted says: When I test My believing servant and he remains patient over My trial while praising Me, then (when he recovers and) rises from his bed, he is as free from sin as the day his mother gave birth to him. Furthermore, Allah the Exalted says to the angels who record deeds: I have confined My servant and am testing him, so continue to record for him the same (good deeds) that you used to record for him when he was healthy (even though he is not performing those deeds now).”
