Hadith 147

Sulaiman bin Yasar says: When the people dispersed from around Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), a prominent man from the people of Sham said: “Respected one! Narrate to us a hadith that you heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).” He said: “Yes, I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: ‘On the Day of Resurrection, the judgment will be passed first on (three types of) people: (1) The man who was martyred, he will be brought, Allah Almighty will make him recognize His blessings, and he will acknowledge them. Then Allah Almighty will ask: What did you do with them? He will say: I fought in Your way until I was martyred. Allah Almighty will say: You have lied, you fought so that it would be said you are brave, and so it has been said (in the world). Then it will be ordered regarding him, and he will be dragged on his face and thrown into Hell. (2) The man who learned and taught knowledge and recited the Qur’an, he will be brought, Allah Almighty will make him recognize His blessings, and he will acknowledge them. Allah Almighty will say: What did you do with them? He will say: I learned and taught knowledge for Your sake and recited the Qur’an. Allah Almighty will say: You have lied, you learned knowledge so that it would be said you are a scholar, and you recited the Qur’an so that it would be said you are a reciter, and so it has been said. Then it will be ordered regarding him that he be dragged on his face and thrown into Hell. (3) The man whom Allah Almighty made prosperous and wealthy and granted all kinds of wealth, he will be brought, Allah Almighty will make him recognize His blessings, and he will acknowledge them. Then Allah Almighty will say: What did you do with them? He will say: I spent in all the ways You liked for Your sake. Allah Almighty will say: You have lied, you spent so that it would be said you are generous, and so it has been said. Then it will be ordered regarding him, according to which he will be dragged on his face and thrown into Hell.’”
