Hadith 1388

Amr bin Shu’aib narrates from his father, who narrates from his grandfather, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: When the delegations of Hawazin were coming to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I was also present there. They said: O Muhammad! We are people of family and tribe, show kindness to us, may Allah show kindness to you. A trial has befallen us which is not hidden from you. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Choose one thing from your children or your wealth.” They said: You have given us the choice between our lineage and our wealth, so we will give preference to our children. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The share that is mine and that of Banu Abdul Muttalib will be returned to you. As soon as I finish the Zuhr prayer, say like this: We intercede with the Messenger of Allah regarding the return of our children and wives to the believers, and with the believers to the Messenger of Allah.” They did so. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) heard their words and said: “Whatever is in my share and the share of Banu Abdul Muttalib is yours.” The Muhajirun said: Whatever has come in our share is for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Ansar said the same. ‘Uyainah bin Badr said: Whatever has come in my share and the share of Banu Fazarah will not be returned. Aqra’ bin Habis said: As for me and Banu Tamim, we will not return it. ‘Abbas bin Mirdas said: I and Banu Sulaym will also not return it. But Hayyan said: You are lying, all of it is for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “People! Return their women and children to them. Whoever wants to take his share, then as soon as Allah grants us war booty or spoils, we will give him six times as much.” Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mounted his she-camel, and the people clung to him saying, “Distribute our wealth among us,” until they drove him to a thorny tree, which snatched his cloak. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “People! Return my cloak to me. By Allah! If I had camels equal to the number of the trees of Tihamah, I would distribute them among you, and then you would not find me miserly, cowardly, or a liar.” Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went near his camel, took some hairs from its hump between his forefinger and middle finger, raised them and said: “People! My share in this war booty is not even as much as these hairs, except for the khums (one-fifth), and that too will be distributed among you. So return even the needle and thread (everything). (Remember that) betrayal will be a disgrace, shame, and humiliation for the betrayers on the Day of Resurrection.”
