Sayyiduna ‘Ubada bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to obey him in hardship and ease, in what we like and dislike, to listen to his command and to give him preference over ourselves, and also that we would not dispute the matter (of leadership) with its rightful people, unless we see clear disbelief for which there is a clear proof from Allah, and (we pledged) that wherever we are, we will speak the truth and will not fear the blame of any blamer for the sake of Allah.
