Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Sahihah

Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When sixty-four Ansar and six Muhajirun were martyred on the day of Uhud, the Companions of the Messenger said: If such a day comes again, we will take revenge on the polytheists more than the number of our martyrs. When the day of the conquest of Makkah came, an unknown man said: After today, the Quraysh will be annihilated. Meanwhile, the announcer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) proclaimed: Every black and white (i.e., every common and noble person) will be granted safety, except so-and-so, so-and-so... (naming a few people). Then Allah the Exalted revealed these verses: "And if you take retribution, then take retribution to the extent that you were harmed, but if you are patient, it is better for those who are patient." (Surah An-Nahl: 126) The Messenger of Allah said: "We will be patient and will not take revenge."
