Sayyiduna Abu Shurayh (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said something on the second day of the conquest of Makkah. My ears heard it, my heart remembered it, and my eyes saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying it. He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) praised and glorified Allah, and then said: "Indeed, Makkah was not made sacred by the people, but Allah, the Exalted, made it sacred. Now, it is not lawful for anyone who believes in Allah and the Last Day to shed blood here or to cut down its trees. If anyone seeks permission (for fighting) by using the fighting of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) as a proof for himself, then say to him that Allah, the Exalted, allowed His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) (to fight) in Makkah, and He did not allow you, and even for me, it was permitted only for a part of the day. After that, its sanctity returned as it was yesterday. Those who are present should convey (these rulings) to those who are absent."
